Tag date versions

Last updated 10/02/2026

For data condition tags, a user's tag value may differ each time the tag is calculated. When you analyze historical data, you sometimes need the user's tag at a specific point in the past, or at the time a past behavior occurred. In the system, you can use tag date versions to keep the tag values as of a past date.

1. Create tag date versions

You can add historical date versions to a tag in either of the following ways:

A. When you create or edit a data condition tag, turn on Scheduled Update, and then also turn on the Auto Backup switch.

Once the switch is on, at the daily scheduled update time, the system also calculates the tag data for the previous day and saves it as the version for the previous day's date.

Note that when Auto Backup calculates the previous day's tag, it uses the user data backed up on the previous day and the user behavior data up to 23:59:59 of the previous day.

In addition to a single update per day, the system also supports updating multiple times a day, weekly, or monthly

B. In the user tag list, click a tag name to go to the tag details page, and add versions in Version History.

To backfill tag data for a past date, or to add historical date versions to a tag without scheduled updates, click Batch calculate in the upper-right corner of the version history page to add or recalculate versions. You can also click the recalculate icon in a version's row to recalculate only that version.

In the Calculate tag on the dates dialog, you can select Dates to calculate (All historical versions / Abnormal version) and configure the data rules for backfilling versions, as shown below.

SettingUser data used
"Use user data from the match date" offCurrent user data
"Use user data from the match date" onUser data exists for the dateUser data from that date
No user data for the date

One of the following two strategies

  • For missing dates, use "the current data"
  • For missing dates, use "the nearest date's data"

Because user property data can be updated, we generally recommend using user historical data, which approximates the result of calculating the tag on that day.

2. Use tag date versions

If a tag has data for multiple date versions, you can specify the version you need when you use it to filter or group in an analysis, or when you create a custom property:

  • Latest: Calculated using the user's current tag value
  • Match by date: Calculated using the user's tag value on the day the event occurred
  • Past date: Calculated using the user's tag value on a specified date

Note: Currently, Events Analysis, Retention Analysis, Funnel Analysis, Distribution Analysis, Flows Analysis, and Interval Analysis support selecting a tag version. Composition Analysis can use only the latest version of a tag.
